Producers are encouraged to soil test their alfalfa fields on a yearly basis. Then they should apply lime, P and K based on these recommendations. Unfortunately, soil tests for S are considered by most soil scientists to be inaccurate. Therefore, if you want to test alfalfa fields for S you should collect and submit a tissue test. This is done by collecting the top six inches of multiple stems in the field just before harvest and submitting them to a testing lab that conducts tissue tests.  Recent Univ. of KY research failed to show a benefit to S fertilization on alfalfa stands that showed S deficiency from tissue tests, but we predict that some fields with low organic matter may respond to S fertilization.
